Nice, wet, fertile, rotting, humus underneath this Stinkhorn mushroom

Currently reading: Cloud Atlas: A Novel by David Mitchell 📚

Today I was able to sing outdoors with 4 friends. We all love to sing Shape Note songs and we felt connection with our 5 voices singing 4-part harmony and these old, strange songs. 📷

I am mostly recovered from my Shingles vaccine side effects 24 hours later. Thanks to the many who shared their stories of either the vaccine or Shingles (Hellfire!) itself.

Finished reading: Matrix: A Novel by Lauren Groff 📚I loved this book. Very different from her other novels. Semi-historical fiction about an abbess in the 12th century. Beautiful, lyrical, and tied to the present day in many subtle ways.

Quit reading: Creatures of Passage by Morowa Yejidé 📚While I liked the characters, the writing and the setting (DC in 1977 when I was in high school there), there was far too much child abuse so I had to quit at about half-way through.

This mural has meaning to me, my high school mascot. I went to my 40th reunion a few years ago.

Had my first Shingles vaccine yesterday. Side effects are brutal for me! Fainted this morning, deep waves of nausea. It’s getting better but a nasty headache lingers. But it’s worth it to be protected from that painful illness.

I’m totally cheating by posting old photos. When in doubt, use a cat picture! Here’s Tamsin kitty from 2018, not resting yet but on the bed.

Finished reading: Midnight Robber by Nalo Hopkinson 📚I have mixed feelings. I loved the language (a Caribbean influenced patois) and the world building. I hated the child abuse.

Finished reading: Actress by Anne Enright 📚Possibly an unreliable narrator. I actually like when I’m not sure whether I can trust the story teller. An excellent book about some of the bad things that happened in the 50s, 60s and 70s.

Finished reading: The Reason I Jump: The Inner Voice of a Thirteen-Year-Old Boy with Autism by Naoki Higashida 📚I don’t have much to say. It was quite “preachy” but also had some interesting insights.

I didn’t need a compass to find this bear down by our mailboxes two years ago

I like the way the “leaves” rotate around the pinecone
