Finished reading: Midnight Robber by Nalo Hopkinson πŸ“šI have mixed feelings. I loved the language (a Caribbean influenced patois) and the world building. I hated the child abuse.

Finished reading: Actress by Anne Enright πŸ“šPossibly an unreliable narrator. I actually like when I’m not sure whether I can trust the story teller. An excellent book about some of the bad things that happened in the 50s, 60s and 70s.

Finished reading: The Reason I Jump: The Inner Voice of a Thirteen-Year-Old Boy with Autism by Naoki Higashida πŸ“šI don’t have much to say. It was quite “preachy” but also had some interesting insights.

Finished Reading Saigon by Sam Hawken πŸ“šI really enjoyed it. I don’t love suspense or violence and this story had manageable, interesting, levels of both. I cared about the characters. More importantly, I cared about Vietnam. A few typos but nothing that took away from the story.

Finished reading: Beautiful Ruins: A Novel by Jess Walter πŸ“šEntertaining enough, but I won’t be seeking out work by this author.

Finished reading: The Paris Library: A Novel by Janet Skeslien Charles πŸ“šI did not love it. While the setting, Paris during the German Occupation, was interesting, the book seemed more like a YA novel than a book for adults.

Finished reading: A Closed and Common Orbit: Wayfarers 2 by Becky Chambers πŸ“šI loved it. I mean, it’s not great literature, but it’s fun, has interesting characters, and is a thoughtful portrayal of a future with sympatico AI. What does it mean to be friends with an AI?

Finished reading: Solutions and Other Problems by Allie Brosh πŸ“šA hard read. Allie’s had a tough hand dealt to her and she doesn’t hold back here in describing a lot of pain. While I wouldn’t call it a funny book, she is so aware of life’s absurdities that there are funny moments.

Finished reading: The Listeners by Leni Zumas πŸ“šI did not enjoy this book though I read it all the way through so it wasn’t bad enough to drop. Awful, mentally ill, characters doing terrible things without much redemption. What’s the point of reading about so much bad behavior?

Finished reading: Jack: A Novel by Marilynne Robinson πŸ“š I’m definitely on a Marilynne Robinson kick, such shimmering writing! Here, she continues to meditate on the unhoused, what it’s like to be mentally ill, and bad decisions.

Finished reading: Elderhood: Redefining Aging, Transforming Medicine, Reimagining Life by Louise Aronson πŸ“šAn excellent book, especially for any of us who plan to grow old.

Finished Reading Incredible Doom vol. 1 by Matthew Bogart and Jesse Holden πŸ“šVery fun trip back to the past of the dial-up 90s-era Internet. Some depictions of parental anger/abuse.

Finished reading: Born A Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah πŸ“šI didn’t love it, but it is an interesting story of growing up as mixed race in post-apartheid South Africa. Includes harrowing stories of abuse.

Finished reading: The Water Dancer by Ta-Nehisi Coates πŸ“š A good read. Dragged a bit in the middle but overall great characters and a good glimpse into a fictionalized version of life under the terrible institution of slavery.
